YA A to Z: Sharon Flake

Why I chose Sharon Flake:

My school was fortunate enough to host a visit from Sharon Flake several years ago and she was spellbinding. Just like with her novels, she had the students hanging on her every word. Her characters, and the situations in which they find themselves, are intimately relatable for the students I serve. I have a difficult time keeping her books in stock, they are constantly coming and going. Often, they are so well loved at the end of the year that I have to put them on my reorder list.

Brief Biography:

Sharon Flake was born in Philadelphia, PA, and currently resides in Pittsburg, PA. She holds a degree from the University of Pittsburg in English and has worked with young people both as a house parent for youth temporarily placed in shelters and with young people in the foster care system.

She has been the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent and the Coretta Scott King Award. Ms Flake has also been listed on YALSA’s Best Books for Young Adult Readers, Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, and Best Books for Reluctant Readers. A complete list of her honors and awards can be found on her web site.
